What is the difference between a site licence and a collector's licence?

Short answer: A site licence covers a dealer who runs a fixed yard or premises and is tied to that site, while a collector's licence covers someone who collects scrap from door to door or from other locations and is not tied to a single site, and each is issued by a local council, with the main practical difference for you being whether you are taking your scrap to a yard or having it collected.

A site licence

This applies to a business running a yard and lists the premises it covers, so check that the site you are visiting is the one named.

A collector’s licence

This applies to someone who collects from homes or businesses, and is issued by a council and should be shown on request, including on the vehicle.

Why the difference matters to you

If a collector turns up at your door, ask to see the licence, and if you are dropping off at a yard, check that the yard is licensed.
